Gas flaring- One of Nigeria’s biggest embarrassments

Despite the enormous economic challenges in the country, Nigeria loses over $2.5 billion to gas flaring annually. This is despite the tremendous amounts of environmental pollution and health challenges being caused by the irresponsible act. Statistics indicate that Nigeria alone accounts for about 40 percent of gas flared annually across Africa, and this causes a monthly average of 200 gas-related deaths in the Niger Delta. Does the ‘patient dog’ get any bone at all?

In this age of intense global competition, there is an urgent need for Nigeria to step up its upstream (exploration and production) activities. Nigeria is already far behind in gas exports compared to countries such as Australia, Qatar, and highly threatened by gas findings in Mozambique. Firm announces more gas earnings for 2017
