Indoor air pollution from cooking with solid fuels is causing the premature deaths of an estimated 4 million people annually from pneumonia, chronic lung disease and lung cancer, as well as ill-health and the loss of productivity among many people.

Much of these people affected are women and children, as women are usually responsible for cooking and small children often remain close to their mothers.

In fact, indoor smoke from solid fuels is  one  of  the leading  causes  of avoidable  deaths and ill-health worldwide (WHO, 2012).

Historically in Nigeria, the preferred method of cooking had been using firewood. This comes along with many sentiments. Many Nigerians believe cooking with wood makes food sweeter. Others believe only firewood can sufficiently provide the amount of heat needed for certain types of cooking.

Not only are these claims largely debatable, but firewood hugely pollutes air quality,affects biodiversity and is eco-destructive, as there are several impacts of felling trees.

Yet, food remains a basic human need; and to make food, man must cook. How can the challenge of clean cooking be solved?
